VH1’s The Shot and some more underwater photography

Personal

So I don’t watch tv at all; I don’t even have cable. But a few of my photographer friends were talking about a new show on VH1 called The Shot, which is something akin to America’s Next Top Model (so I’ve been told). The twist is that it’s from the other side of the lens and the photographers are all pitted against each other for a chance at a Victoria’s Secret campaign and a spread in Marie Claire. I’ve actually started watching it on my computer – which is great because there are no commercials.

Anyway, the last show featured the budding photographers taking pictures of a model underwater in beautiful dresses. It is something I would love to try out sometime if the waterproof casing, scuba gear, and underwater lighting were a reasonable purchase. But I saw their pictures and it sparked some pictures I knew I saw online a while ago.

After a bit of searching, I found Alberich Mathews. He has absolutely fascinating pictures of women underwater in flowing dresses and they looking completely ethereal and incredibly unreal. A lot of his work is tasteful nude women underwater as well. He had a site at www.valkyries.com which had a huge collection of his images but it seems to be down. You can find some of his work on flickr.

Here’s one that I really like:

A little bit of googling will find a few more of his pics but I guess I’ll just have to wait for the book that he’s putting together, Rheinmaidens and Rusalka.

Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving holiday and didn’t spend too much time in the malls. And before you go back to work on Monday, you may even want to catch The Shot Sunday night.

July Desktop Images
May and June were huge this year. I’ve never been so busy in my life. I’m still going through the thousands of images to get wedding images out to my incredible brides and grooms. I’m thankful for July’s heat that seems to slow down the weddings and give me time to grab a breath and get to more post processing before the fall season comes along and wallops me.Perhaps some of you are teachers and are collectively celebrating the beginning of summer. Or maybe you’re a 9 to 5er with a few weekends to spare down the shore. In any case, think of me slaving away at the computer… and grinning at all of the memories I’ve been so lucky to share ...

Happy Fourth of July
Wave your little flags, watch the sky for fantastic colors, and eat yourself silly among friends and family! You have to love a nation that celebrates its independence every July 4, not with a parade of guns, tanks, and soldiers who file by the White House in a show of strength and muscle, but with family picnics where kids throw Frisbees, the potato salad gets iffy, and the flies die from happiness. You may think you have overeaten, but it is patriotism. ~Erma Bombeck

Fathers
About this time last year I learned how to develop film and print my own images in the darkroom. I wanted to give my first finished picture to my dad for his birthday on June 23rd. I agonized over which image to choose. I finally decided on this iris and spent weeks perfecting my chemical baths, lights, and dodging and burning to create a portrait I was proud to give him.He was the one who gave me my first camera and encouraged my love of photography. He has been proud of me every step of the way through all trials and tribulations.I have just experienced my first Father's Day without my father. He passed away July 7th, 2006 from lung can ...
