“The couple that plays together stays together” was the motto of Drea and Steve’s wedding. This was evident from the wedding invitation that was delivered in a cornhole bag and continued through the day.
This should have surprised no one since this couple is the epitome of fun. Read all about their meeting from their Longwood Gardens engagement session post.
But back to the wedding…
It was a rainy day. A very rainy day. Along with a beautiful necklace and earrings, Steve sent Drea a little note and a souvenir the morning of the wedding.
Drea got ready at Steve’s family’s house. It was a bustling home with giggling flower girls, makeup, hair pins, and about a million options for Drea’s shoes and jewelry.
She wore a stunningly simple gown with a sweet bow detail on the back and shared her something blue with me (the stitching a gift from her aunt). It was the very first dress she tried on.
Meanwhile, the guys figured out the art of the bowtie at a nearby hotel.
The wedding ceremony was held at St. Robert Bellarmine Church, his home parish where he went to grade school. It was a lovely ceremony and so warm and comfortable as the rain continued to fall outside.
The skies dried up post ceremony as we made our way to the Duportail House is Chesterbrook for their cocktail hour and reception.
We used the time before the guests arrived to walk around the intensely lush greenery and beautiful old buildings.
But this was no ordinary wedding. There was no ho-hum first dance of walking in a circle to a song you’ve heard a million times. Drea is Chilean. For their first dance, they performed a cueca to the delight of their guests. It is a traditional choreographed dance from Chile that mimics a couple’s courting with handkerchiefs (Drea used one belonging to her grandmother). Steve wore spurs that belonged to Drea’s grandfather.
This led off the party, which continued with toasts inside the old barn. Tiny champagne bottles were given to each guest to cheer the couple.
Steve meticulously created the incredible layered cupcake stand that held hundreds of miniature cupcakes. He also somehow carved the cake topper while only minimally injuring himself.
But that was just the beginning. The reception was meant to be a celebration with games and laughter. And it truly was. Drea and Steve had created tons of games for their guests – cornhole boards (one set used as a “guest book”), Giant Pong, Molkky, custom Frisbees, and board games scattered around. It was a blast to see guests roam in and out of the tent, laughing, getting competitive, and playing.
Even the little ones got in on it.
Despite the rain, the day was fabulous, personal, and so much fun. Just the way Drea and Steve wanted it. Thank you two so much for including me in your games!
