Dominican Republic Trip & March Facebook Cover Images

Personal

I am notoriously terrible for creating a black hole of personal pictures.

Remember how I went to Scotland? Black hole.
Ocean City, MD? Black hole.
Ziplining? Black hole.
Atlantic City? Black hole.
Delaware Water Gap? Black hole.
Poconos? Black hole.

Those are just this past year. I bring my camera on adventures and of course I feel compelled to document things but then comes the editing. I can’t bring myself to edit personal pictures when there is so much more I should be doing: emails, marketing, editing for clients, phone calls, meetings, weddings, engagements, families, card designs, blog posts, etc.

Why edit them at all? A picture doesn’t feel finished until it’s been edited. (I’d never hand over raw client images – the image is only half way there!) I’ll take some casual people shots on my phone and post them on Facebook but I just can’t do that when I’ve been on some great trip, saw new, exciting things, and came home with a memory card full of stuff.

In the spirit of trying to be better, here are some snapshots from a recent trip to the Dominican Republic. It was a fantastic time and I worked hard to be “in the moment” and only used my little, green point-and-shoot camera instead of my big, professional one. I breezed through a few in Lightroom so that I could share.

(Because I know you weren’t sure – I’m the smaller shadow.)

There is only so much we could do at the resort (we quickly checked off marveling at paradise, getting burnt, drinking lots of sugary rum drinks, listening to the waves, playing ‘guess the accent,’ getting a couple’s massage, and finishing a book).  On day 3 we took a trip to San Pedro for horeseback riding and views outside of the landscaped and manicured complex.

The other big export next to sugar is tobacco. We visited a cigar factory.

On day 4 we traveled to Saona Island.  With a stop at a tourist shopping compound, we took a bus to a speedboat to spend a day basking, drinking more rum and coke, and watching the clear water lap against the white sand before returning on a catamaran full of partying Europeans.

The last day there we traveled around Santo Domingo, the capital. This is a city that has more history in its little finger than all of Pennsylvania (and that’s saying something).

A peek inside: our whimsical gender neutral nursery
In January 2015 when I first found out I was pregnant, I was overwhelmed.  We had just started trying and became pregnant right away.  To be honest, I wasn’t ready.  I needed more time and everything I read said to expect many months.  I was looking forward to the charting and planning.  But there it was: that extra line. To avoid thinking about the massive impending change to our lives, I spent the next 38 weeks focusing my attention to designing the nursery.  I had Pinterest boards galore and wandered in and out of my husband’s then-office almost daily to get measurements of walls and windows.  I had scraps of paper with sketches, di ...

She’s been around through some of the hardest and most spectacular times in my life. She has comforted me when I’ve cried and joined in on dance parties when I’ve celebrated. She has lived with me in 5 different states. She can be too smart for her own good. She is the best cuddler I know but has a problem with bed wetting. She loves to run but has no patience for my hobby of running just for the sake of it. She’s a great listener. She has a mouth on her, but only really in front of her friends. She thinks naps are just about the greatest things in the world. This superlative also extends to basking in the sun, unattended food, road ...
