Today is an extraordinary day for the United States. This morning, the Supreme Court struck down keys parts of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) and declared that same-sex couples who are legally married deserve equal rights to the hundreds of benefits under federal law that go to all other married couples.
I keep my political opinions to myself when it comes to this blog but I feel that such a monumental ruling on LOVE has a special place here.
My life is surrounded by love and weddings and it’s incredible. That we could even think of denying rights to gay couples is an atrocity. 12 states and DC offer marriages for all committed couples; I am eager for the day Pennsylvania joins the group that will be on the right side of history.
Planning a wedding is frustrating and confusing and infuriating but it is days like these that remind me that I get to do something that so many Americans are shamefully denied. I hope that we will soon see the day when everyone can experience this same frustration and also joy, elation, and excitement that I am feeling. When that happens, I am so looking forward to being a part of it and photographing even more legally binding ceremonies for men and women, men and men, and women and women.
The laws of our land are catching up to the fundamental truth that millions of Americans hold in our hearts: when all Americans are treated as equal, no matter who they are or whom they love, we are all more free.
