About this time last year I learned how to develop film and print my own images in the darkroom. I wanted to give my first finished picture to my dad for his birthday on June 23rd. I agonized over which image to choose. I finally decided on this iris and spent weeks perfecting my chemical baths, lights, and dodging and burning to create a portrait I was proud to give him.He was the one who gave me my first camera and encouraged my love of photography. My Grandfather, the Reverend George MacPherson Docherty
I learned on Saturday of the passing of my paternal grandfather, the Rev. George M. Docherty.He was a great man who raised 5 children and witnessed the death of two, my own father being one of them.He was also the man behind the controversial addition of "Under God" in the pledge of allegiance. A simple search of "George Docherty" will yield plenty of information about how a Scotsman came to America and was the influential minister to President Eisenhower at the famous New York Avenue Presbyterian Church in Washington, DC.He was 97 when he died on Thanksgiving in his home in Pennsylvania. VH1’s The Shot and some more underwater photography
So I don't watch tv at all; I don't even have cable. But a few of my photographer friends were talking about a new show on VH1 called The Shot, which is something akin to America's Next Top Model (so I've been told). The twist is that it's from the other side of the lens and the photographers are all pitted against each other for a chance at a Victoria's Secret campaign and a spread in Marie Claire.
